This snowy family session in Leavenworth was everything I hoped it would be! Shot entirely on film, I used Kodak Portra 400 in both medium format and 35mm scanned by The Find Lab. My goto film cameras are a Contax 645 medium format camera and a Canon 1v 35mm which uses all my Canon L-series lenses. You can see how rich and vibrant those greens are, they almost look like an oil painting. Visiting from Montana, this family was no stranger to snow.

If you already shoot film and would like to know how I meter for snow, keep reading. I metered bulb out at a 90-degree angle and metered for the mid-tones. According to The Find Lab’s blog post on How to meter for snow, snow can look more gray than white, and The Find Lab suggests overexposing 2 stops. so I rated my Portra 400 at 200 and simply overexposed as suggested. Portra 400 is ideal for shooting film in the snow because it has more latitude and can be pushed 1-2 stops also it can handle a variety of lighting situations.
